Artists Genna and Signe Grushovenko’s Art in Front Entry of The Met

Both the North and South Buildings of The Met at Boulevard One have installed works of art  created by artists Genna and Signe Grushovenko in the front entryways.  These are very vibrant contemporary oil paintings and are inspired by vintage photographs with the sense of nostalgia of a simpler time and the balance of vintage imagery mixed with a contemporary style.  The Grushovenko’s are a husband and wife team located in Greenville, South Carolina who have an interesting story to how their art is created.

This dynamic duo has a very unique process to their creations. According to their website, they describe their process as follows “Genna begins their process by applying rich layers of pattern and tone to gessoed masonite or linen supports. Signe then selects an inspiration image from their extensive collection of vintage found photos, draws with oil pastel atop the abstract underlayer using the photo for reference, and completes the image with blocky 'panes' of oil color.  The final results of their collaboration are multi-layered paintings with deep surfaces, crisp at first glance but rewarding the careful viewer with an undercurrent of complex tonality and colorplay.”  They choose to not feature faces on the people they paint as a way for the people viewing their creations to input their own experiences, feelings and ideas into the art.

The Met is honored to have the pieces titled “Jet Set” and  “Looking Up” as part of our carefully curated collection of art within the interior and exterior of the buildings.  We hope these pieces spark joy and meaningful conversation to residents and visitors for many years to come.  They are definitely one of our favorite pieces here at The Met.
