Artist Lyman Whitaker’s Wind Sculptures Featured at The Met

Utah based artist, Lyman Whitaker’s Wind Sculptures have been installed in both the open space of the North and South Buildings at The Met at Boulevard One.  Whitaker has been a practicing sculptor for over 50 years, with the past 30 years primarily focused on creating Wind Sculptures. His art experience is vast as he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the University of Utah and studied under Advard Fairbanks and Angelo Carvaglia.  This is where he learned various classical sculpture techniques as well as contemporary design.

The Wind Sculptures, featured at The Met, are produced by hand and inspired by plant shapes and nature.  His work seems to feel at home placed surrounded by plants and is the reason why his sculptures do not have much color.  He wants them to blend in with nature and when spotted it to be a discovery for the viewer.  According to his website, Whitaker describes his art as follows, “The Wind Sculptures are kinetic art that responds to the changing currents of the wind. Lyman has created sculptures that are innovative, artistic and responsive to their surroundings. Each is hand-produced and has a high degree of mechanical integrity and quality craftsmanship”.

These sculptures are quiet even on the windiest of days, and he envisions that when people view his art, that the Wind Sculptures evoke feelings of peace and calmness.  Whitaker states, “I care deeply about our ecosystem and the world’s societal impact on it. As an artist, I can express my concern for the survival of our planet through a creative medium. The Wind Sculptures offer a comforting release from our fast-paced lives with their calm serenity and playfulness."

Lyman Whitaker’s art is featured across the country from arboretums to airports to municipality buildings and now to The Met at Boulevard One.  We welcome these Wind Sculptures to our community and look forward to sharing them with residents of The Met and our neighbors in Lowry.
